Week 2 (bonus) - My Story
Bonus Post - My Story
This is week 2 of 6 of my blog series that is running up to the launch of my new book Limitless. There are no actions for you in this bonus post, but I thought I would share with you an extract from the book where I talk about ‘My Story’:
‘I was brought up in Port Talbot, a large industrial town in South Wales, United Kingdom. We lived on Sandfields Estate and next to a vast expanse of sandy beach and it still brings a smile to my face whenever I think of it. ‘The Estate’, as it was more commonly known, was an earthy, grounded place with working-class people striving to provide for their families. I didn’t have a poor upbringing, but it wasn’t affluent. We didn’t want for anything as my parents both worked incredibly hard, which instilled an excellent work ethic in me.
My childhood was a happy one apart from a stammer which plagued me in my younger years and still trips me up now and again. I started to get tormented and bullied because of it, and it didn’t help that my skin gains a suntan in minutes giving me a darker complexion and some racist nicknames. My parents decided to send me to judo, to help me find the confidence to stand up to the bullies. I enjoyed judo despite not winning a single fight until I was thirteen, but my perseverance prevailed, and I went on to become Welsh Champion when I was fifteen and was awarded my black belt when I was seventeen. Judo has been one of the biggest influences in my life.
I was academically strong and did well despite attending a dysfunctional school with a poor academic record. I went to Warwick University where I studied Electronic Engineering, and my father still says to this day that I cannot even wire a plug, and he’s right. I graduated with a master’s degree and secured a job in a management consultancy where I spent six years learning my trade. I then set up my own consultancy where I spent the next twelve years working with many large global businesses leading their business transformation programmes.
I’ve always had a strong work ethic and a fierce inner critic that has driven me to earn more money, be ‘better’ and more successful. As I got older, I found I couldn’t work for as many hours as I could in my twenties; the all-day energy was no longer there. I was more stressed than at any other time in my life, and my priorities were skewed towards work first, followed by my family and then myself. At the time, I felt that it was just a part of getting older and that being a bit fat was part of the look of a forty-year-old. From the outside, my life appeared to be perfectly balanced and very successful, but it was tough trying to strike the right balance, and I couldn’t focus and work as hard as I could when I was in my twenties. As the working week went on, it became more tiring. The weekends were used as downtime to help recharge for another relentless working week rather than spending quality time with my family.
I decided to take matters back into my own hands and delved deep into the world of peak performance to get more out of life, maximise my energy, reach my full potential, and turn back my biological clock. I found Bulletproof Coffee®, and this switched my brain on like nothing I had felt before. I then went on to focus on eating what makes me feel great and easily lost three stone of fat in just three months. Next, I experimented with optimising my sleep, meditation, cold therapy, light therapy and nootropics to further increase my energy and mental performance. My energy levels are now better than when I was in my early twenties, and my clarity of thought, cognitive abilities and decision making has never been better. Be prepared for the ripple effect because once people see your transformation they will start doing the same things.
As part of my journey, I certified as a Bulletproof® Coach with the Human Potential Institute and created Stronger Self®, to help high performing entrepreneurs and senior leaders to get even more out of life and re-establish balance by putting themselves first.
I now run a successful online community of people looking to improve their performance and live a higher quality of life. I also coach one to one with a select number of senior leaders and entrepreneurs to help them put themselves first, and in doing so, they make a step change in their overall performance across their professional and personal lives’.
